Dubai residents may soon be able to soar over traffic, as Joby Aviation conducts test flights of their electric air taxi. This marks the start of their commercial operations in the region. Joby Aviation is working towards a global air taxi vision, and this achievement is pivotal.
Dubai Showcases First Electric Air Taxi Flights
This week, Dubai witnessed the demo flights of the first electric Aerial Taxis. They were able to successfully perform vertical takeoff and land, admissioning them into the wingborne flight phase. Mattar Al Tayer, the director-general of the RTA, was present during the flights, further emphasizing the readiness to integrate urban air mobility into the emirate’s transportation system. His company has also designed the taxi to hold a pilot and 4 passengers, reaching speeds of 320 km/h which means commuting will no longer be a hassle. The air taxis have the potential to change the economics of commuting by substantially cutting time. A ride from DXB to Palm Jumeirah will drop from 45 mins drive to 12 air taxi mins which unlocks a premium method of avoiding congestion in the Emirate.
“We want to change the way people commute,” said Anthony Khoury, Joby’s UAE General Manager. “While early pricing may target higher-income travelers, our long-term ambition is to make aerial taxis affordable for everyone.”

Building Infrastructure and Partnerships
In partnership with Dubai’s RTA, the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, and the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority, Joby is advancing toward a 2026 launch of commercial operations with exclusive rights to operate air taxis in Dubai for six years, secured under a landmark 2024 agreement. Vertiport construction is underway at four initial locations: DXB, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Downtown, and Dubai Marina, with the first vertiport at DXB on track for Q1 2026 completion in partnership with Skyports Infrastructure.
“The air taxi will introduce a new premium service for residents and visitors seeking smooth, fast, and safe travel to key destinations,” said His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer. “It will strengthen integration with public transport systems and enhance connectivity across Dubai.”
A Critical Development for Air Travel
The Dubai test flights build upon nearly two years of hot-weather trials at Edwards Air Force Base in the United States and mark a new chapter in Joby’s direct operations, aircraft sales and regional partnerships strategy. Joby is a forerunner in the growing urban air mobility space, having completed over 40,000 miles of flight testing and successful piloted transition flights.
Regulatory approvals, vertiport infrastructure development, and scalability all pose significant hurdles for the industry as a whole; however, the company continues to work steadily toward their vision for air travel that is clean, quiet, fast and part of daily life.
“In aviation, you don’t see transformations like this often,” said Didier Papadopoulos, Joby’s President of Original Equipment Manufacturing. “What you’re witnessing here is truly exciting.”
With Joby solidifying their dominance over the air taxi market, Dubai could very soon be using their skies as a global stage for the future of urban mobility.

Conclusion: Soaring to the Future
Joby’s test flights in Dubai shift the needle closer to cleaning, quieting, and speeding up urban aerial commuting. Both Joby and Dubai’s commitment air taxis seem to be making the jump from vision to reality. With significant hurdles still needing to be addressed like the construction of needed infrastructure and regulation frameworks for traffic management.
With a workaround launch in 2026 Dubai is poised to become the global leader in urban air mobility and as such is set to turn the future of commuting on its head, soon considering flying over traffic instead of sitting in it.
