Both U.S. based companies are working toward FAA certification and future commercial launch, but their recent test flights have highlighted the differences in their approach.
Archer’s Record-Breaking Test Flight
On August 15, 2025, Archer Aviation proudly announced the completion of a 31 minute and 51 mile piloted test flight of their flagship Midnight eVTOL. Conducted in FAA airspace and one of the longest and most sophisticated flights undertaken within the emerging sector, this flight is a testament to the advancement of Archer Aviation.
The Midnight aircraft executed numerous missions that are representative of real-world urban mobility, verifying its effectiveness as a sharprt-haul and regional air travel substitute.

Joby’s Earlier Milestone
Earlier this summer, Joby Aviation showcased a piloted flight that lasted 12 minutes and covered 12 miles. This achievement was considered an important milestone towards certification. Joby has been a pioneer in the eVTOL sector, having received strong backing from Toyota and partnered with Delta Air Lines for planned operations in the U.S. However, Archer’s longer test has shifted the spotlight, positioning it as a direct public challenger in both performance and perception.

Investor Caution Despite Progress
Despite the technological accomplishments, the stock market reacted with caution. Following their respective announcements:
Archer’s stock decreased by roughly 5.7% and dipped an additional 0.6% later.
Joby’s stock declined about 7.5%, only to fall an additional 0.9%.
Analysts noted that while the flights are a clear sign of engineering progress, the vast majority of investors are concerned with the certification timeline, infrastructure, and the overall return on investment.
